The CW Upfronts!
Last but not least, in the “what’s new this fall” category comes from the new UPN/WB merger, “The CW.” Also, I may begin referring to this channel as C-Dubs, so please don’t be caught off guard.
There are only two new series planned so far for C-Dubs, which isn’t much of a surprise as the biggest part of this experiment is what kind of ratings the network’s existing shows can bring in without the unneeded competition from another network going after the exact same audience. So a lot of what you’ll see on this network will be familiar faces (or at least recognizable) from years past. Veronica Mars, Gilmore Girls, Everybody Hates Chris, Smallville– all made the cut. But more on those later. Let’s check out the new shows after the jump…
The Game — This is a spin-off of the show Girlfriends, which I’m sure most of this audience watches regularly. The twist is that a woman (I guess one of the girlfriends?) deals with all that comes with dating a pro-football player. I haven’t seen Footballer’s Wives, the BBC series, but this premise reminds me of it (despite the fact that it, in all likelihood, couldn’t be more different in tone).
Runaway — A man is accused of a murder he didn’t commit (I’m getting tired of typing that sentence). So he picks up his family and moves them to Iowa (equally tired typing that sentence). But is he safe?! (Probably, no)
And that’s it. The Game will probably be quite popular for its target audience as Girlfriends is going to be its lead-in. Runaway I don’t see taking off as the story has been done to death this season, and people will likely latch onto whatever version is on the bigger network (though Donnie Walberg is in the C-Dubs version!).
