Sell Me: “My So-Called Life”
Today a deluxe DVD Box Set of My So-Called Life, the apparent king of teen dramas, is being released. Being far more interested in movies and getting speeding tickets in 1995 I have never seen a single frame of this series. So I’m going to use this forum to ask for your opinion. Is this show worth my $40? Years ago, based exclusively on being unemployed, completely bored and freezing I decided to buy the Freaks and Geeks box set and it was one of the best purchases I’ve made this decade. Will My So-Called Life deliver the same television bliss? Did you watch the show when it originally aired? Have you seen it since? I’m curious as it’s definitely one of those “Brilliant But Cancelled” shows you often hear about, but is it really that good?
Let me know in the comments.

Yes. Yes, it really is that good.
Much like “Freaks & Geeks” it is filled with moments that make you cringe because it captures those awkward, teenage moments in all of their painful glory.
I watched it when it first aired (back in junior high school) and was convinced that Winnie Holzman stolen my diary. Even then I knew that it was a quality show.
When the DVD’s came out many years later (with no extras, no commentary, nada), I watched all the episodes and found that they held up - all too well.
I am not ashamed to admit that I break out the DVD’s on a regular basis and tend to watch certain episodes with a ridiculous regularity. (My particular favorites: Ep. 5 - The Zit; Ep. 12 - Self Esteem; Ep. 19 - In Dreams Begin Responsibilities)
That being said it IS 100% worth the $40, but if you really don’t want to spend the money I can loan you the (original) set.

The full twin peaks set also came out today. Strangely coincidental that two shows that have such a cult following and have had fans clamoring for real all-out box sets have their releases on the same day. The Twin Peaks set is pack to the rim with extras, including the great Saturday night live sketch and monologue from when Kyle Mclaughlin hosted. Full specs of both shows sets can be found here…. http://www.aintitcool.com/node/34608

If you don’t buy the DVDs, I am never reading this blog again and I’m mailing you all the metal pieces from Star Wars Monopoly.
