“Beauty and the Geek” — Viva Mexico

Viva MexicoHoly moly!

I think it’s safe to say that Dave is the man. First he demonstrates his mad back-handspring skills at a party, then gets two kisses (on the lips!) from the incredibly perky Jasmine, followed by the shocking (and maybe a little stomach-churning) act of him ripping his shirt open during the salsa dance competition. I haven’t seen skin that blinding since the summer I worked at a camp for radioactive children (eh-hem, sorry, I’ve been working on my Family Guy spec). More after the jump…

A brief word about Sam. Is it just me or does he kind of seem like he’s faking it? Look, between the first week and now a lot of the beauties have toned down the ditziness a bit and have proven themselves to be rather interesting, cool and especially not shallow people, but a lot of that we can chock up to reality-show editing and producer-coaching. With Sam it seems to be something different altogether. While he certainly may be the balls-to-the-wall party animal, obsessed with his appearance and and whatnot, he is way too self-aware, which might explain why he’s so damn good at the challenges. The super-hero episode gave us a little insight into his actual mindgrapes. Metro-Man was perhaps a little too on-the-nose perfect don’t we think? Sam is no slouch (hell, none of the beauties are… especially at this point), but he seems oddly prepared.

In the “shut the hell up” category, William and Jen(n?) are driving me crazy. More William than Jen. She seems to at least want to right the ship, whereas he has completely sealed himself off from any emotional growth whatsoever. And all because of his tortured high school years? I mean, I get it… but only in theory. In practice it seems unfathomable that a guy could hold a grudge for that long (and this is coming from a guy who loves holding grudges… sometimes just for fun!). This is a total gots-to-go situation and yet somehow the two of them skirted the elimination round while the very likable (though strategically strong) John and Natalie got the boot.

Did I mention that this whole week took place in Mexico? This twist was introduced by the host under the headline of “The Game Is Evolving” which in reality circles is about as much of a buzz-phrase as “We’re going green” in the manufacturing sector. Yes, I love when the game changes because it usually means the game is in fact not changing but that the production company has a little extra money to burn on airfare and/or a desire to not kick someone off this week (occasionally deciding to kick off two people). Reality television: where surprises are never particularly surprising.
