“Grey’s Anatomy” — Forever Young
Was once a geek?
Thursday evening I visited my alma mater with some college friends to see old professors, walk around campus a bit, and catch a student performance. Being there, of course, brought back memories, and I spent most of the evening telling stories over pitchers of beer at the local bar. While I had some of the best four years of my life in college, it’s nice not to live in that world everyday. (That’s a lie; I do miss my daily wardrobe of sweatpants, jeans, and hoodies.) But what about the hot doctors of Grey’s Anatomy, I wonder how they spent their undergrad years, or even med school? More after the jump…
We’ll never know the answers to these questions because the show insists taking us back to high school. Every. Single. Season. Luckily, we got the prerequisite high school angst and stereotypes hour early this year. This time, a bus crash of students connected the doctors’ old and current problems to the teens’ current ones.
I am not going to spend time on the “that is so deep†comparisons between doctor and patient, doctor and doctor, and O.R. and high school cafeteria because subtlety is not the show’s strongest suit. The return of Thatcher Grey though, drunk and in the ER, did excuse Meredith and Lexie from the high school drama. However, Mer’s reaction to having her estranged father say he’s proud of her and issue an apology made her oblivious to that fact that he has a serious problem. And while Lexie at first didn’t want to deal with her father, Mer’s childish ignorance made Lexie step up to be the adult in the situation. She is the on dealing with his drinking and meanness every day. It has taken more episodes than I would have liked, but Lexie is finally becoming a character. And, dare I say, I am even looking forward to see how her relationship with Alex develops.
There are only three completed episodes left before the writers’ strike interrupts the show. And up until this week, Grey’s was getting better by the episode. Hopefully, despite the awful November Sweeps EVENT promo for next week’s two-parter, the upward trend will continue.
