“Weeds” — Bill Sussmam

Bill SussmanI’m sorry, Andy Millman was wrong. Wigs can be funny.

Weeds has gone from being at the top of my “excited to watch” list to somewhere between Oprah and reruns of George Lopez. It’s not that it’s a bad show, it’s just wildly inconsistent… and maybe a little racist (maybe more than a little). If not for the million-faces-of-Mary-Louise Parker it would be a far more difficult sell (and probably placed on the list between one of those creepy penis-enlargement infomercials and that really weird call-in game show where the host talks at the screen for two hours without stopping in the middle of the night). A bit more after the break…

“Hey, it’s Paul F. Tompkins playing a character that isn’t in front of a green screen on a VH1 head-show!” says Rick as he makes notes on his laptop while watching the episode. “Good for him!”

Fifteen minutes in we finally get to Conrad at the grow house and I had an almost immediate, “Oh yeah, I remember this character” reaction. Seriously, what’s up with his almost complete lack of anything substantive to do this season? I trust it’ll all come back together later in the season, but damn, isn’t he suppose to be a main character. Mr. Malco needs to talk with his agent (then again, maybe got word from on high that this series wasn’t really as good as everyone thought it was after last season and has been intentionally sneaking out the back).

Frustrations aside, there was some pretty funny stuff this week. Notably: Doug and Celia’s gavel-off during the town hall meeting and the presentation by the sole member of the Agrestic eco-somethingerothers; Andy wearing the wig he bought at Rite-Aid (yeah, wigs and glasses, am I havin’ a laugh?); Marvin, who is always funny; Andy at Sanjay’s house; WWVMD – what would Vic Mackey do?; the army/lawyering interrogation sequence “Suck yourself!” I laughed a lot. This is a good thing. We’ll do it again next week when Mary-Kate Olsen joins the cast. Now that’ll be a full house! BAM!
