“The Office” — Women’s Appreciation
Foliage.
Last week I was of the opinion that The Office might have run its course. A good thing doesn’t last forever, and that seems to be especially true of television comedies. Luckily, television also has the power to get you to change your mind one week later. Thursday night’s “Super-Sized” episode of The Office (and wow, how many 40-minute episodes have their been this season? Four?) might be my favorite episode in the series two-year run.
There were brilliant moments scattered all over this one, but what made it great TV is that it was the type of episode where Michael actually learns something (or at least appears to have learned something). Either way, where we start the show isn’t where we are when it ends. More after the break…
Personally my favorite moments of “Women’s Appreciation” had to do with the discovery of the women’s bathroom by the men in the office. Back in high school I remember that one of the malls built this gorgeous new department store and that one of its big selling points was that it had these lush restrooms. When I finally went I’d walk past the women’s, seeing people come out saying things like, “Oh, the couches were so nice” or “I couldn’t believe all the marble!” So I walk into the men’s room and… it was just a men’s room — kind of clean but curiously wet pumped with smooth jazz and mostly-empty soap dispensers. This is what everyone was so excited about? I appreciated The Office in showing us all that, YES, women’s bathrooms are (pardon the expression) the shit.
And speaking of, Creed once again becomes creepier and funnier, admitting to us that he’s flashed his share of innocents in his day, and that his only weird trait is needing to use the lady’s room for a deuce. So weird.
Another great set of jokes dealt with Angela wearing children’s clothes. When she described shopping at the American Girl store and looking for clothes for large colonial dolls I almost fell out of my chair and surely woke up my roommate (I like to watch TV really, really early in the morning).
There was also the weird realization that Jan is a bit of a deviant. “Foliage,” role playing, and “anything that doesn’t scare us isn’t worth doing” because a few of the factors in play that got the ladies in the office to convince Michael to break up with Jan (”It’s not me, it’s you”)… over voice-mail.
All of this, of course, leads us right into the last episodes of the season with Karen and Jim realizing that maybe their match wasn’t made in heaven… or even E-Harmony, and Pam being as single as ever.

I actually watched it last night and was astonished at how unfunny (and one-note) it was.
That said, you didn’t wake me up, so we all win.

For whatever reason, I feel like I should clarify: I didn’t find last night’s episode funny, but I didn’t think it was bad, either. I guess it seemed like Michael’s story had depth and intrigue, which made the jokey stuff (especially Dwight and Creed) feel out of place.
Steve C., though — great actor.
