Goooooooooosechill!

Um. That was excruciating. I almost had to turn it off. But does that make it good? Thoughts? I’m kind of at a loss.

it was the most awkward half hour of television ever… and I am pretty sure that made it awesome..

I agree with Adam. I think the mission in this episode was to show just how awful of a relationship Janis and Michael really have, fueled mainly by their codependencies. The tension from this alone made for one of the worst dinner parties anyone could ask for. Even Jim couldn’t make light of it, and you know that’s a bad sign. This is definitely not the episode I was expecting to come back to, but I feel satisfied nevertheless, which must say something.
Remember: it’s awkwardness like this that made the UK version of The Office what it was. David Brent’s little act he performed for the “management class” (especially topped with the boombox bit) had to have been one of the most cringe-inducing things I’ve ever watched.

Additionally, I think it’s funny that Pam was afraid of being killed by Janis at some point during the party — and yet the idea somehow didn’t seem too far-fetched.

It was indeed painful. Maybe it was all meant to represent the pain and awkwardness of several months of a writer’s strike?
BUT - my two favorite parts - the song by Hunter. Hilarious. And when Dwight showed up and they showed Pam saying “Awesome.” She was really the everyman in this episode. She appreciated the horribleness in a way that the viewer did, thought it was awesome when Dwight showed up (as did I), and struggled about whether or not to leave with Jim - kind of how I struggled with whether or not I could change the channel, and ultimately both Pam and I were convinced to stay and see how things turned out.
