“The Hills” — With This Ring…

You're The Best! What’s more awkward than a first date? How about watching someone else’s first date? This week Whitney, who is quickly becoming my favorite of The Hills clan, went out with Jarett, her personal trainer. Watching their date was kind of like watching a fever dream of every first date went on in the history of modern romance over a span of three minutes. Jarett, who seemed to be trying to hard wouldn’t let her finish a thought before asking a new questions, even dipping into the “What’s you sign… I actually don’t know what that means” back of post-modern date-lines. More after the jump…

What’s perhaps most interesting is in the seemingly endless train of gentlemen callers that pass through this show Jarett might be the most forgettable (both a positive and a negative) and yet it seemed like he was the first that actually caught the eye of any of the ladies — then again, she did seem fairly ambivalent about the whole thing the next day while talking with Lauren. I don’t know. Perhaps I should check back in with Christina to figure this whole thing out.

Heidi and Spencer, on the more pertinent to the series’ supposed premise front, went out looking at churches for their future sham of a marriage. This freaks out Spencer because he only thinks of himself, causing him to pack bags for the two of them so they can elope in Vegas. Heidi, always levelheaded if not particularly cognoscente of what is developing around her, finds this to be a horrible idea and gives him back the ring. He then, brilliantly, goes to sleep at his parents house.

If there were any justice in this bankrupt world, that would have been the last we’d seen of Spencer and Heidi would go back to being girly with the girls, dating personal trainers and saying things like, “What?” and “No way!” but this is not the case. The next day he comes back avec roses — yes, roses! Heidi forgives (but likely doesn’t forget), takes back the ring and the two continue on their path to complete and utter social alienation. Viva marriage!

There might have been more happening in this episode but I likely missed it due to the incredibly annoying ads for Rock Band that popped up every four minutes complete with out-of-nowhere guitar riff and cheering audience sounders. Thanks for that, MTV.
