“The Hills” — A clip show.

CLIP SHOW!

Last night I tuned into The Hills hoping for something a little trashy with curiously competent cinematography, but what I got was a clip show. Clip shows certainly have their purpose. In this case they can catch someone up on a series that they might not have been following all that closely. They also give the production crew an extra week to make sure everything is coming in on time. For the hard-core viewer, however, a clip show is a detour you aren’t all that thrilled about taking. It’s like running a marathon and then half-way to the finish line getting handed a note that says, “Sorry, you were suppose to take a left back at mile-marker one,” thus explaining why you’d been running completely alone in the desert for the past two hours. At least MTV promised in the lead-in that I would be given footage I “had never seen!” so I stuck with it and refreshed myself on what had happened to our characters over the past two months. I’ll fill you in after the jump…

Ready? Here it goes: So Lauren is pissed at Heidi because she thinks Heidi started the rumors about her and Jason making an “inappropriate video” and they have a big confrontation at a club and more or less seal their fate as arch enemies, despite the fact that Heidi invited Lauren and Whitney and Audrina to her housewarming party thinking that the other girls were upset with her more because she was still with Spencer who had hired someone to graffiti one of the walls in their apartment with “Hollywood” which wreaked of production designer but what can you do Spencer is an ass which was proven weeks later when he and Heidi “miraculously” went to the same restaurant as Lauren and the now-sober and soon-to-be-engaged Jason and said something about how he was so glad they were back together, and speaking of getting engaged Spencer popped the question to Heidi and gave her a ring he sent away for on the back of a box of Sugar Smacks and she said yes even though we never really see her say yes and suspect this whole thing is a setup since Spencer has yet to tell his parents he’s getting married even though Heidi is dress shopping and the fact that her parents hate Spencer and think she is making a serious mistake but it certainly isn’t getting in the way of her career since she finagled her way ahead of Elodie and scored a cool office which ultimately made Elodie quit her job and screw Heidi by not showing up for a gig she said she would work which is why Elodie is awesome, and Lauren, while all of this is going on, is getting buddy-buddy with Brody who might have actually started those rumors though I don’t know if we’re suppose to know this yet or not, but he seems like a decent guy even though Lauren is totally crazy and always makes mountains out of proverbial mole-hills (speaking of I’d love to watch a show on MTV called “The Mole-Hills.” I don’t know what it’d be about, but I bet it’d be full of scandal!) but she is still in much better shape than Audrina who is dating Bobby/Justin/Justin-Bobby, the biggest tool this side of Ace Hardware, despite the fact that they constantly break up and then get back together and the break up again only to get back together so one has to assume he’s totally packin’ or something, and while all of this is going on Whitney is smiling and providing necessary reaction shots leading to that deleted material we were promised in the opening tease!

The “scene” ended up being a minute-long exchange between Elodie and Lauren that more or less detailed the Elodie/Heidi work situation that we already knew about. Also awesome was that most of this magical scene had been used in the tease right off the top of the show. Classic Hills move.

Whew!

Yes, the clip show struck again, and it proved victorious. At least there’ll be new content next week — hopefully dripping in scandal.
