“How I Met Your Mother” — Something Blue (Season Finale)
Wait for it…
Most of us HIMYM die-hards had suspected that Ted and Robin were going to have been broken up by the time of the wedding, but the writers did an excellent job of throwing us off their trail. After all, this is a show about how the story is told almost as much as it is a about the story itself. More after the break…
As a companion to last week’s “Something Borrowed,” this half of Marshall and Lily’s wedding had a lot more drama — probably something that should be expected given the direction in which things were heading. Still, there were some solid laughs, not the least of which being Barney’s unrelenting “tell us what” chant interrupted by an announcement about a Nissan Stanza with its lights on. I don’t know why, but the Nissan Stanza is an intrinsically funny car.
Most surprising was Barney’s seriousness while talking with Ted toward the end of the episode. It’s good to know that he’s an actual character and not just a writers tool for jokes.
Most depressing, however, was that even though this episode was billed as a “season finale” it sure felt like a “series finale.” I probably wouldn’t have thought so until our narrator said the line, “I was able to meet your mother,” when talking about the positives of his break-up with Robin. The line didn’t seem out of place, but it definitely stuck out given the behind-the-scenes gnashing of teeth over the show (apparently). We’ll know it’s fate by the end of the week, but if — god forbid — the series is cancelled, I have to ask, “Did this episode make for a suitable finale for the series?”
Honestly, I think it did.

I don’t agree it was a suitable series finale. It was the end of one part of the story but not the end of the whole. Would it be ok? Maybe. Was it a good enough ending for how good the show is? No! We need to find out how he met their mother….just like the title says.

Just thinking more about this episode. I think it would serve as a so-so ending. I’d much rather have them stop shy of totally resolving it (and meeting their mother) than trying to resolve it and then compensating if they do get picked up for another season.
On another note, I’ve been a big Barney fan for a while, though I think this season he seemed a little overused and flat at times. In this episode, however, I think Neil Patrick Harris proved that he is the second-best comedic actor (not comedian/actor) on TV, second only to Alec Baldwin. Stanzas are funny. Barney and NPH’s comedic presence would be sorely missed.
