“Samantha Who?” — The Job

The Job

Maybe it’s my recent decision to start tucking in my shirt and to stop dressing like a slob, or maybe it’s the fact that I recently applied something called “Face Polish” to my forehead, but I’m really enjoying Christina Applegate’s new series Samantha Who? I suppose the only thing left is for me to take a spinning class and watch Oprah. More after the jump…

“Pushing Daisies” — The Fun in Funeral

The Fun In Funeral“We’re fairly adorable… is this a problem?

Pushing Daisies, now three weeks into its run (and past the two-episode Barry Sonnenfeld “is it just a fluke” stage), and while it’s certainly a fun show to watch, it is getting dangerously close to being too cutesy for its own good. But, is “cutesy” really a problem? More after the jump…

“Samantha Who?” — Pilot

PilotLadies and genltemen… Christina Applegate!

It feels like the fall season has been underway for ages, and yet here we are still getting new series premieres. I’m sure there’s some sort of rhyme or reason as to why this is, perhaps the networks’ desire to wait until the initial onslaught of new programming has ebbed a bit, giving shows they might think need a little nurturing the space they deserve. The problem with this is, for me at least, completely forgetting a series is about to launch until stumbling upon it in the cable guide. Last night ABC debuted Samantha Who?, a new single-camera comedy about a woman who wakes from a coma with amnesia and slowly finds out that she used to be a completely awful human being. “Grey’s Anatomy” - Let the Truth Sting

That's one sexy hospital!Sad is mine, go find your own pretend emotion.

It’s been a long week at work. And coming home after another day, all I wanted was to watch some quality television. 30 Rock got it right; The Office, too; but what about Grey’s Anatomy? Well, it didn’t meet my expectations this week. Since Mer was VO-ing about the consequences of telling the truth in the episode, I will do the same. More after the jump…

“Pushing Daisies” — Dummy

DummyDon’t tase me bro!

So far so good. The show wasn’t just a pilot. Of course this episode was still directed by Barry Sonnenfeld, so we might have to wait another week before making a final judgment. Still, things are looking very positive for fans of super-stylized fairy-tales on network TV. More after the jump…

“Dirty Sexy Money” — I’m out.

Oh Darlings.Last week I gave myself a 15-minute ultimatum, on Dirty Sexy Money. Either the show would prove to me that it was more like it’s pilot and not like the soapy mess that was the second episode or I was going to walk away and never look back (or at least in theory). Well, I watched the first fifteen minutes and while it wasn’t episode-two bad, it wasn’t nearly as sharp as I had hoped it would be. In short, this isn’t the series for me.

Wednesdays are kind of a packed night and there’s no real reason to continue watching something I don’t fully support when there’s so much else that’s worthy of being seen. Let me know if things get especially crazy, in the era of DVD, a show never really dies anymore.

One last thing, and another reason why DSM isn’t making the cut: as a faux New Yorker, nothing annoys me more than shooting LA for New York. If you’ve been here you know what I mean, and chances are even if you haven’t you still get the problem.

“Grey’s Anatomy” — Love/Addiction

That's one sexy hospital!Anyone want a toaster in exchange for carnage?

Flashback to spring 2005, at a happy hour with co-workers a conversation about television starts. “Lost, blah blah, Desperate Housewives, blah blah, HBO. Has anyone started watching Grey’s Anatomy?” I reply, “Ooh, Hot Doctors!” with great enthusiasm. From that point on, the show—especially when it’s good—has always been known to me as Hot Doctors and this week’s episode was no exception. This episode had all the elements that make Grey’s Anatomy a quality series. Mer’s voice over about addiction established the theme and the patients of the week, of course, related to it. A meth lab explosion in an apartment building brought the meth makers, an addict, an addicted baby, and an innocent apartment resident (played awesomely by Ben Vereen) to Seattle Grace. And our doctors actually got to be doctors. I was surprised how effortlessly the Resident Foursome are growing into their new roles as residents. Since Bailey was their teacher, I shouldn’t be surprised, but even the way the actors are carrying themselves on screen shows a new air of responsibility. While the transition from students to teachers continues to leave Bailey in a state of flux, her scolding of Alex in the O.R. gallery was one of the best scenes of the episode.

“Pushing Daisies” — Pilot

PilotI would give my left ear to be a pie-maker.

Last night’s premiere of Pushing Daisies on ABC has been almost universally praised as the best new series of the year. You won’t hear an argument about that from me, though the show does have one extremely problematic element in its presentation: we have absolutely no idea what episode two is going to be like. “Dirty Sexy Money” — The Lions

The Lions

Looks like Krause is sporting the ol’ post-pilot haircut, where in the time between filming the first episode and the second months have gone by causing an actor’s look to change ever-so-slightly. Is this a problem for the show going forward? Not really, unless sideburn-continuity is something you lost sleep over. No, the problems  with Dirty Sexy Money are a bit more dire. “Carpoolers” — Dougie’s First Day

Dougie's First Day

If you’re going to make a series about a bunch of guys in a carpool, you probably won’t have a better comedic moment than a scene where each of the carpool members start singing along to the song on the radio, and if that song happens to be Air Supply’s “I’m All Out Of Love” — all the better. Unfortunately for Carpoolers, ABC post-Cavemen new comedy, this moment comes before the opening credits of the pilot episode. More after the jump…

“Grey’s Anatomy” — A Change is Gonna Come

Shut up, Lexie Shut up, Lexie.

Let me introduce myself: I’m Liz, and I’ll be writing about Grey’s Anatomy here because I don’t have enough time to run my own TV blog.

I am always hesitant about first episodes of returning series because they never seem to live up to my expectations. (The upcoming new season of The Wire, you are excluded.) The months between May Sweeps and the new fall TV season hold such promise, mainly hinging on how cliffhangers will be resolved? Grey’s Anatomy, as expected, ends its seasons on emotional cliffhangers rather then physical ones—unless you count Meredith turning her head back and forth between whatever love triangle she is involved with at the time as a physical cliffhanger. So where did we last leave our hot doctors…

“Dirty Sexy Money” — Pilot

PilotYeah, I’m awesome and this show is awesome and no more questions.

Of all the new shows this fall, the greatest single moment comes early in ABC’s Dirty Sexy Money. Peter Krause’s character Nick is attending the funeral of his father, the former lawyer to the rich and powerful Darling family. Once inside the doors of St. Patrick’s Cathedral Nick shakes hands with Brian, one of the Darling sons and an ordained priest. Brian hates Nick and after a brief exchange, dressed in full saintly black with the ubiquitous white collar mutters a hilarious and bitter, “I hate you.” For my money (which is, I guess, none given that it’s broadcast TV), that one line reading sold the show. It is, after all, funny to see priests swear, fight and generally hate people around him — Brian does all of these things in the premiere episode, and he’s only one of the five Darling children. New Tonight: Robot-Woman edition

Robot Face!My dear, you look absolutely perplexed.

It just doesn’t seem to end, does it? Tonight three new shows are premiering, along with new episodes from a couple gems from last week… and Top Chef. It’s OK. Sleep is overrated.

Bionic Woman — NBC 9:00pm
A so-so remake of a cheesy show about a robot-woman not called Small Wonder, though I haven’t seen the reworked pilot. I can guarantee lots of robot-woman fighting, if that’s your thing.

Life — NBC 10:00pm
Honestly, I know very little of this show. I know it’s about a guy who was wrongly imprisoned and then joins the police force. I’ve also heard the pilot is quite good.

Private Practice — ABC 9:00pm
It’s the Grey’s Anatomy spinoff. I won’t be watching (thank god!), though I assume many will. Let me know how it is.

Dirty Sexy Money — ABC 10:00pm
I really liked this show. It’s funny, has the always awesome Peter Krause, is briskly paced and kind of reminds me of a dramatic version of Arrested Development. That being said most the hour is dedicated to exposition, so who knows where it goes. Still, it’s the most interesting hour of the night.

Let’s also not forget we have new episodes of the awesome Kid Nation (8:00pm CBS) and Gossip Girl (9:00pm CW) as well as the (pen?)ultimate Top Chef.

Good luck!

K-Bell, free from the “Lost” rumors decides to slum it with Hiro

New FansAfter last season’s horribly uninteresting Heroes finale, I was fully prepared to cut my losses and walk away from the show altogether. Unfortunately, Kristin Bell’s loveliness has thwarted my plans once again with its beautiful blonde locks and snappy come-backs by joining the cast (for a few episodes anyway) in its second season (so says TV Guide.com). Not nearly as exciting as the almost-news a few weeks back that she would be spending time on the Lost island, it is nonetheless good to know that we won’t have to wait until her movie with Jason Segel to catch a glimpse of Ms. Veronica Mars acting all sassy.

Her character on Heroes is described as a “sexy, myserious young lady” which sounds like a role she could play while in a coma. I for one can’t wait until next week when we find out this news was bogus and that she’ll actually be joining the cast of Jericho.

Thanks Andrea for the tip!
