“Pushing Daisies” — Dummy

DummyDon’t tase me bro!

So far so good. The show wasn’t just a pilot. Of course this episode was still directed by Barry Sonnenfeld, so we might have to wait another week before making a final judgment. Still, things are looking very positive for fans of super-stylized fairy-tales on network TV. More after the jump…

I suspect one of the joys of this series is seeing how our two star-crossed lovers can get around the no touching policy. The kiss while inside two body bags was a cute touch, though as people said last week, how long can they keep it up and keep it fresh. I’m hoping this is one of those series that just continues to defy expectations, though for this to be true every week will seem like the last good episode. Obviously this is a difficult way to watch a series.

Other items of note:

  • I loved that the villain was also the one of the main bad guys last season on Veronica Mars, though this piece of information has little impact on the quality of this series.
  • I also didn’t mind Kristin Chenoweth’s song in the middle of the episode. I assume this irked a good number of people and all I can say is, 1) this show is a fairy tale, so why not have singing and 2) I’ve already seen Viva Laughlin, so maybe that puts things in perspective — you have no idea just how bad singing can be until you see that show (previews Sunday on CBS).
  • Chi McBride is awesome. It’s like having a series where Stanley from The Office is a detective. It’s those same great grimaces but with more dialogue and a purpose in the plot.
  • I’m curious how many weeks we’ll have to listen to the narrator tell the audience “The Rules.” I didn’t mind this week because the show is still new and because it used a different story to explain everything. That being said, I could see this getting really annoying for people who actually do tune in each week.
  • What I think will help Pushing Daisies over the long-haul is the creative storytelling. While this week’s mystery never made all that much sense, I loved its skewed logic and how it was almost a deconstruction of the typical television procedural. It didn’t really matter how things ended, but was entertaining enough just to watch them get from point A to point B — a problem that Reaper, in particular, can’t seem to figure out despite having all the tools in its arsenal.

Plus there’s pie. God I love pie!

chi mcbride IS awesome. his stress relieving knitting (begetting the knitted money sacks) is great. and he is the one character keeping the show from floating away in a cloud of too much whimsy.

    also, I love pie too.
